This wonderful miniature enamel on copper painting of a Mastiff dog. The painting is signed and dated J.W. Bailey 1883. John William Bailey (1831 – 1914) was a British miniature painter. He was born in London and was educated at Stratford-on-Avon. Bailey received artistic training under William Essex, and executed portraits and enamels of dogs. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy for three decades (1859 -1889).

On the back of the painting is a paper label. Printed on the label is, “Winslow’s dog, “Champion” signed J. Bailey”. Dr. Forbes Winslow was a founding father of the Old English Mastiff Club in 1883.

Painting measures 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″.

The work was published in Nuremberg by J. J. Fleischmann between 1748 and 1752. The natural history work features birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish with their skeletons. All of the plates were drawn and etched by Meyer himself.

Wilson, photographer, (copying and enlarging a specialty), was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1848; moved to Ogdensburg, N.Y., in 1862, and came to Cherokee, Ia., in 1870, being one of its earliest settlers; has served as a member of the city council two years. He married Carrie L. Bates, of Durand, Ill., and has one child—Bessie M.

Bronze Sculpture

This 1890 bronze on a marble base by Spanish/French sculptor Charles Mercier Gantrago is one of two at the Mastiff Museum. This version has a natural bronze patina; its companion has a gold gilt surface.

Sterling Silver, Dish Tray

This sterling silver, dish tray was masterfully designed by Joseph Rodgers of Sheffield, England in 1910. It features a highly-detailed portrait of a Mastiff dog with a buckled collar. This amazing portrait is encircled with the dog’s lead. This exquisite dish tray is 5″ in diameter, it is fully hallmarked.

Minuratures by Bailey

This pretty much confirms the Crown Prince attribution, as these miniatures by Bailey depicts one showing Crown Prince and probably represents the only color representations of this famous/infamous Mastiff.
